INDEPENDENCE -It took Grayson County a long time to get started but once the Blue Devils found their stride they rolled over the Rural Retreat Indians, 55-20, in a nondistrict game played at Bill Strong Field Friday.
Rural Retreat came into the game the underdog but they didn’t play like underdogs in the first period.
The Indians put together a good first drive but Xavier Rodriguez ended the threat when he picked off a Zayne Williams pass at the Blue Devil 26.
Both teams traded punts before the Blue Devils got good field position on a punt return. Grayson drove to the Rural Retreat 37 and was moved back five yards because of a false start. From there, Rodriguez broke free of the Indian defenders and scored the game’s first touchdown on a 42-yard run. Mario Ruiz kicked the extra point and the Blue Devils had the early lead at 7-0 with 5:13 to play in the first period.
The Indians tied the game with 8:46 to play in the second quarter when Williams scored on a 1-yard plunge. The kick was good for a 7-7 tie.
The Blue Devils came back with a good drive of their own that ended at the Indian 20-yard line when Rodriguez was stopped on a fourth down play.
The Indians drove the length of the field to take their only lead with Tyler Miller scoring on a 22-yard pass from Williams. The extra point kick was good and the Blue Devils were down 14-7 with 2:42 to play in the second period.
The Blue Devils answered with their own scoring drive and with 45 seconds left in the half, Spencer Roberts caught a 16-yard pass from quarterback Ethan Hash for the touchdown. The kick was wide and the Blue Devils trailed 14-13.
The outstanding play of the Blue Devil defensive unit gave the offense another chance to score with 28 seconds left in the half when Logan Watson recovered an Indian fumble at the Rural Retreat 40.
Hash got a good run on first down to the 33 and an offside penalty on the Indians gave the Blue Devils a first down at the 28.
With no time on the clock and on the final play of the half, Mikey Rodgers caught a 28-yard scoring pass from Hash. The run for the extra point was no good and the Blue Devils took a 19-14 lead into the locker room.
The Blue Devils returned the second half kickoff to their own 26. A long pass from Hash to Eric Harvey gave the Blue Devils a first down at the Rural Retreat 38. Two plays later, Hash tagged Rodriguez with a 25-yard scoring pass to give the Blue Devils some breathing room. Rodriguez also ran the extra point for a 27-14 lead.
Rural Retreat fumbled the kickoff and Jacob Parnell recovered for the Blue Devils at the Indian 28. Logan Watson picked up 12 yards to the 16 and four plays later, Hash scored from a yard out and added the extra point run to give the Blue Devils a 35-14 margin.
The Indians got on the scoreboard one final time with 3:03 to play in the third when Travis Foster caught a 75-yard touchdown pass from a scrambling Anderson. The extra point kick was blocked by Johnny Warren and the Indians cut the lead to 35-20.
With 1:03 to play in the third, Parnell recovered his second fumble of the game at the Indian 44 but the Blue Devils failed to move the ball and were forced to punt.
The Indians put together a good drive and drove to the Blue Devil 25. On a fourth down play, Daniel Crawford intercepted for the Blue Devils and raced 75 yards for the touchdown. Ruiz kicked the extra point and the Blue Devils led 42-20.
Rural Retreat fumbled again and James Goins recovered for the Blue Devils at the Indian 38. A five-yard penalty moved the ball back to the 43. On first down, Nathan Cowley raced 43 yards for the touchdown with 5:40 to play in the game. The kick was wide and the Blue Devils led 48-20.
The Indians didn’t give up and drove to the Grayson County 10 where the Blue Devils stopped them on downs.
Max Rodgers didn’t let his brother outdo him in the game. On first down, with 1:36 to play, he broke loose on a 90-yard run for a touchdown and Ruiz kicked the extra point for the final margin.
Blue Devil coach Brett McPherson said he expected a tough game from the Indians and he wasn’t disappointed.
“They played hard and didn’t give up,” he said. “But we played hard also and took advantage of every mistake they made to put points on the board.”
He said his team was working on getting better every game.
The Blue Devils are 3-0 and will travel to Glenvar this Friday night.
