INDEPENDENCE –– Just the night before, Grayson County’s Mikaela Anders scored her 1,000th career point. It only seemed like the Blue Devils had that many on Tuesday.

Grayson County outscored Pocahontas 48-2 in the middle two quarters and rolled to a 79-12 Mountain Empire District win.

Starting three freshmen, Pocahontas actually led in the early going as Crystal Dickens nailed a 3-pointer to open the scoring. But after its 1-for-1 start, the Indians (0-11 overall, 0-2 district) went on a 1-for-15 slide.

Needless to say, it didn’t take long for the Blue Devils (8-5, 2-0) to take control. Megan Funk’s bucket from the lane and Tiffany Blevins’ 3-pointer from the left wing had Grayson County in front and off to the races. A 21-14 Blue Devil rebounding advantage in the first half coupled with 19 Pocahontas turnovers allowed Grayson County to make as many field goals in the first 16 minutes (18) as the Indians attempted.

Pocahontas was within 10 points late in the first period, trailing 15-5, before the Blue Devils closed the half on a 30-2 run. Joyelle Combs sparked a 27-2 second-quarter blitz, opening the quarter with a steal that led to a Blevins layup, hitting two 3-pointers, then coming up with another swipe for a Blevins transition basket.

Anders completed a three-point play for a 34-5 lead at 5:32 of the second, and twice in the quarter, once each by Anders and Leah Hall, the Devils got a three-point play by hitting a foul shot then sticking back the missed second attempt.

Pocahontas misfired on its first 17 floor attempts of the second half, leading to a 27-0 Blue Devil run. Anders scored 11 third-quarter points before taking a seat for good about midway through the quarter.

The Blue Devils got 3-pointers from Kayla Spurlin and Rachel Hash to open the fourth period, and were shooting nearly 57 percent from the floor at that point before cooling off down the stretch. Grayson hit just two of its final 14 shots but still shot 48 percent (31-of-65) for the game.

Three different Blue Devils either matched or outscored Pocahontas by themselves, including Anders’ game-high 23 points. Combs finished with 13 points and Blevins added 12. Spurlin was Grayson’s fourth scorer in double figures with 10. Hall led the Devils’ 46-35 rebounding edge with seven boards, and Larissa Greer had six of Grayson’s 21 steals.

Dickens led Pocahontas with five points and seven rebounds.
