Grayson County’s Garrett Bailey and Mike Vaughan remained undefeated on the year by defeating Conner Wilson and Otto Leung of Graham 6-1, 6-0 in the championship match of the Mountain Empire District doubles tournament last week.
Bailey and Vaughan will carry their perfect mark into Region C play this week.
The Blue Devils advanced to the regionals as a team and will host the event at GCHS. Grayson will take on Pioneer District champion Parry McCluer in one semifinal Tuesday at 9 a.m. Glenvar faces George Wythe in the other semifinal. The championship match is slated for Thursday morning.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
MED singles/doubles: Joyce Kuang of Galax advanced to the Mountain Empire District singles finals after defeating Nicole Gabe of Graham in the semifinals last Monday at Grayson County High School.
Kuang downed Gabe 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 and advanced to meet Bland County’s Grace Sarver in the championship match. Sarver got past Anna Turnmire 6-0, 6-0 in the other semifinal.
Grayson County and Galax both came up short in the doubles semifinals. Graham’s Rebecca Day and Caitlin Williams defeated Joyce Kuang and Claire Engelhardt 6-1, 6-2 while Grace Sarver and Rebecca Havens of Bland County ousted Grayson County’s Anna Turnmire and Alicia Bost 6-1, 6-0.
SOFTBALL
Tazewell 2, Carroll County 1 (11 inn.): The Cavaliers dropped the Southwest District tournament consolation game Thursday at Abingdon in a marathon contest with the Bulldogs.
Lillie Kimble struck out 14 batters for Carroll but the Cavaliers managed just four hits against Tazewell’s Bri Sparks.
Sparks also drove in the winning run in the top of the 11th.
Both pitchers went the distance, neither walking a batter.
Richlands 2, Carroll County 0: Jordyn Cole tossed a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts and added a two-run double as the Blue Tornado edged the Cavaliers in the SWD semifinals Thursday in Abingdon.
