Deer blamed for fatal crash

 HILLSVILLE — A motorcyclist who encountered deer on U.S. 52 in Hillsville crashed Saturday while trying to avoid them.

Injuries that resulted led to the death of the passenger on the motorcycle, identified as Kimberly Wang, 47, of Virginia Beach, according to information from the Hillsville Police Department.

The wreck occurred at around 6 p.m. when a 2005 Harley Davidson, operated by Howard Rolzmacher, 57, also of Virginia Beach, headed northbound on 52, came across the deer near the town limits.

"There were a couple deer in the road and the driver attempted to avoid them and crashed," explained Police Chief Steve Williams.

Carroll Fire-Rescue transported Rolzmacher to Twin County Regional Hospital.

Wang was flown to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., by helicopter.

There was an estimated $2,000 in damage to the motorcycle, according to the report by Officer Brandon Quesenberry.

No charges were filed in the accident.
