"The Nutcracker" returns Dec. 16, along with the hip hop-flavored "Nutty Nutcracker"

The Conservatory of Dance & Theatre will present its sixth annual production of the "The Nutcracker" in four performances, Dec. 16-19 at the Galax High School.
This year includes two performances of the classic "Nutcracker" and two performances of the "Nutty Nutcracker."
The Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows all start at 6 p.m., while the Sunday performance is at 2 p.m.
The Dec. 17 "Nutty Nutcracker" performance is student night. All tickets for those 18 and younger are $3.

The conservatory tries to make each year unique, and this year it is offering both the classical version and the "Nutty Nutcracker,” a comical spin on the traditional ballet. It’s fun and full of surprises — most subtle, but some not so subtle.
A special appearance by INnovation, the hip-hop dance crew from Winston-Salem, N.C., will add a fun twist to the classical ballet. Adding hip-hop dancers with a remix of the “Nutcracker” music is a great way to get young students to see the ballet.
The Galax Youth Ballet soloists includes Clara, a role to be shared by Nicole Hiatt and Victoria Bartlett; Sugar Plum Fairy, played by Kate Clark; Dewdrop, played by Sarah Hall; Snow Queen, shared by Daisy Clark and Christine McLennan; Arabian, shared by Claire Gleason and Christine McLennan; Pirouette Doll, played by Whatley Ozer; Chinese Lead, portrayed by Sarah Hall; and Drosselmeyer, played by Patrick Butler.
Galax Youth Ballet will perform the demi-soloist roles for Marzipan, Roses, Spanish, Snow Princesses and Columbine Doll. The Youth Ballet Corps dancers will perform Party Girls, Soldiers, Cats, Waltz of the Snowflakes, Opening Waltz, Russian, Candy Canes and Flowers. Studio Students will perform as mice, jesters and Chinese.
Performances are all at Galax High School Auditorium. The classical "Nutcracker" will be performed Dec. 16 at 6 p.m. and Dec. 19 at 2 p.m. and the "Nutty Nutcracker" will be Dec 17 and 18 at 6 p.m.
Premium reserved seating is $15 and regular reserved seating is $12 for adults and $5 for children. General admission is $10 for adults and $4 for children. Group rates are available.
Tickets are on sale at the Conservatory of Dance & Theatre from 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Monday through Friday.
