I was gratified to see the Readers’ Hotline item about how much the caller enjoyed “Cruisin’ & Groovin’ in Galax” on June 15.
We had at least 325 antique and classic vehicles and more than 4,000 people there, with wonderful music, vendors, balloons and beach balls, and lots of family fun.
While the band for that night, the Catalinas, was sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and WBRF-WWWJ radio, the events are actually planned and coordinated by the Galax Downtown Association, your local merchants association.
We greatly appreciated the sponsors making the evening spectacular by bringing in the band and holding contests on stage.
Now our group is working to make the next two “Cruisin’ & Groovin’” events just as successful. We will have a beach band, The Attractions, on July 13, 6-9 p.m. on the Grayson Street Stage, along with vendors and the usual car show activities. We are working with the radio station to broadcast live.
Because we do not charge for any of our downtown events, we depend on local businesses to sponsor them. These are your local merchants who make free family evenings available to the community.
Please come and have a great time. And please look on the fliers and posters and listen to the emcee to find out who actually paid for the event.
Then give them your business as often as possible, and tell them how much you appreciate their sponsorships of these events. Thank you!
Kathy Cole, President
Galax Downtown Association
