HILLSVILLE ― The Carroll County Sheriff's Office began an investigation after finding an elderly couple dead in their apartment on Dec. 12, but autopsies attributed the deaths to natural causes.
Carroll Sheriff J.B. Gardner said finding two people deceased at the same time was unusual, but the state medical examiner found no signs of trauma or any other evidence of foul play.
When Carroll County deputies responded to a home at Quail Ridge Court last Wednesday to check on the welfare of an individual there, they found both residents of the home deceased.
Gardner identified the deceased as Kay Roberts, 80, and William Roberts, 86. It appeared that Kay Roberts had ongoing health problems.
Friends of William Roberts at the Grover King Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1115 hadn't seen him for a few days, and they requested that deputies check on him at his home, the sheriff said.
Gardner said he knows that members of the community off Cranberry Road just outside of Galax had concerns after seeing Carroll and Virginia State Police investigators converge at the home.
The autopsy was requested after investigators ruled out other possibilities.
There were no signs of forced entry and no signs of robbery, Gardner said. Deputies ruled out a gas leak as the couple had all electric heat. They found a gun in the house, but it did not appear to have been used or even handled for some time.
Thought apparently natural, the exact cause of death is still unknown.
Toxicology tests take a week and the results had not come back on that as of Friday, the sheriff said.
