No one has been arrested so far after several individuals cashed counterfeit payroll checks — appearing to be from Vaughan-Bassett Furniture — at three local businesses a couple of weeks ago.
According to Galax Police Captain James Cox and Sgt. Chris Brown, several Hispanic subjects cashed about eight checks worth a total of $4,500 at such businesses Horton's Super Market in Galax and Latina Tienda on Glendale Road. They also attempted to cash a check at BB&T bank in Galax.
Cox said the paychecks appeared to be valid, containing the correct account number of Vaughan-Bassett Furniture, and it would have been difficult for the businesses to detect that the checks were bogus.
Cox said he isn't sure how these individuals obtained the account information.
The suspects are believed to be six males and three females — all Hispanic — operating a black, newer-model SUV and a red van with probable North Carolina tags, according to the description the police department obtained.
