Coaching makes difference for Galax

-A A +A

On Aug. 17 I watched two fine football teams battle in Carroll County.
Like many Galax fans, I was concerned about how Galax would perform after losing so many outstanding players from last year’s team.
Well, we got our answer with a Galax victory over a very good Carroll County team.
Which brings me to my main point of how lucky Galax High School’s football players are to have a coach like Mark Dixon, who was All-America at the University of Virginia and an outstanding pro with the Miami Dolphins.
What aspiring football player wouldn’t want to play for him?
And how lucky is Coach Dixon to have all those fine assistants under him? I counted seven on the field that Friday night, which included one of my former players named Verl Brown, who at that time was a 135-pound want-to-be running back.
Verl developed into a super defensive back for a national championship team at Ferrum College. And there was Kim Gillespie, a former outstanding running back for the University of Richmond.
And not to overlook the importance of the vast coaching experience of Larry Spangler and John Patterson.
There were a couple of coaches out there who I don’t even know. How many high school football teams are so lucky to have such a talented coaching staff?
I know one game doesn’t make a season and a couple of injuries could really hurt a short-handed team, but, GHS football team, you have really got us excited.
So, go Maroon Tide!
