INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County endured one miserable shooting slump just fine. Doing so twice was too much to hope for.

The Blue Devils were just 3-of-19 from the floor in fading down the stretch, dropping a Region C Division 2 quarterfinal game 61-57 to Chilhowie.

Grayson County (15-9) came out no worse for wear after hitting just one of its first 16 shots from the floor, and despite the chilly finish, Grayson trailed just 58-57 with less than a minute to go, thanks largely to 3-pointers and free throws. Grayson County made 26 trips to the foul line to Chilhowie’s six and outscored the Warriors 17-3 from the line.

Grayson also hit six 3-pointers, and Tyler Rutherford’s fifth trey of the night cut the gap to a point with 54 seconds showing. But the Warriors’ Tuff Williams scored from the wing 10 seconds later and Rhett Sturgill made one of two free throws with 12 ticks left. Following Rutherford’s 3-pointer, the Blue Devils missed their next five shots, including three from beyond the arc.

Relying on inside buckets and midrange jumpers, Chilhowie shot a balmy 52.8 percent (28-of-53) from the floor, including 15-of-25 after halftime. The Warriors (12-12) led 27-17 on a Williams jumper from the line 3:47 before halftime, but turned the ball over on seven straight possessions to allow Grayson to creep back in. Back-to-back layups from Eric Harvey and Bubba Bowen tied the game at 27, and Bowen capped the 12-0 run with two foul shots for a two-point lead.

Chilhowie’s four-minute scoreless streak ended with a Sturgill 18-footer at the buzzer, knotting the game at 29 at halftime.

From 20 seconds before halftime to the final two minutes of the game, Grayson and Chilhowie were tied eight times and traded the lead another nine times. Rutherford and Bowen hit consecutive 3-pointers to open the second half, but the Warriors took the lead for good on Andrew Russell’s layup at the two-minute mark of the fourth.

Seth McKinney led Chilhowie with 20 points and Williams added 18. Sturgill was good for 10 points.

Rutherford led all scorers with 20 points, Bubba Bowen tossed in 15 and Eric Harvey provided 13 points and 12 rebounds.
