Volunteers in Galax and Hillsville packed boxes of food and other essentials on Dec. 20, for the Galax Ys Men’s annual Community Christmas Chest and the Carroll Christmas Fund.
Carroll Christmas Fund volunteers first organize the donations into categories and then fill the 630 boxes that went to deserving families to ensure that they enjoyed a happy holiday season.
In Galax, volunteers gathered at the Army Reserve Center to fill boxes with everything needed for a holiday meal, including ham, mashed potatoes, Christmas snacks and more.
For the past 30 years, the
Men’s Club have collected donations to feed 550 of the area’s neediest families, just in time for the holidays.
According to Community Christmas Chest chairman Gene Cox, donors have never failed to help the club meet its goal.
When delivering the food boxes, “I’ve been asked many times by [elderly recipients] if we could help them put the food away,” Cox said. “Then, when we opened the refrigerator, it would be empty. This happens far too often.”
Cox thanked the many volunteers and donors who continue to make this project possible.
