Cavs win big; Devils outlast Radford

DUBLIN –– Led by three hits each from six different players, Carroll County scored early and often, taking a 20-1 lead after three innings and hammering  Pulaski County in a five-inning River Ridge District game.

Carroll County (1-1) sent 15 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning, scoring nine runs on seven walks and five hits, including a two-run double off the bat of Kenley Meredith.

The Cavaliers kept it going with seven runs in the second, highlighted by a two-run double by Reece Edwards.

The third inning saw the Cavaliers bat through the lineup for the third straight inning as Carroll tacked on four runs for a 19-run cushion.

The Cavaliers peppered Pulaski County pitching for 23 hits, including three each by Trace Davis, Edwards, Meredith, B.J. Utt, Chris Marshall and Ethan Webb. Seth Burris and Sam Sumner added two hits each.

Meredith and Utt collected four RBIs each while Edwards and Webb both drove in three more.

Burris allowed one earned run on four hits over four innings for the Cavaliers.

Grayson County 7, Radford 6 (9 innings): Will Lawrence stroked a two-out, two-run single in the top of the ninth inning to boost the Blue Devils past the Bobcats in a nondistrict game Tuesday in Radford.

The Bobcats rallied from a 4-1 deficit into a 5-4 lead after six innings and was one out away from the win when Ty Cannaday knotted the score with a two-out single in the top of the seventh.

Radford pushed one run across and had runners at second and third with one out before a strikeout and a ground ball ended it.

Matt Cornett worked the final 2 1/3 innings for the win, giving up one earned run on two hits. Max Rodgers and Luke Wilson had two hits each for Grayson County.

Pulaski County 18, Galax 5: The Cougars were outhit by the Maroon Tide but put together nine hits, a dozen walks, four hit batters and four Galax errors to skate to a five-inning win Wednesday in Dublin.

Six Maroon Tide pitchers combined for the 12 walks to go with seven wild pitches.

Pulaski County led 5-0 when it pushed across eight runs in the bottom of the third. Four different Cougars had two hits apiece. Bryant Cox and Caleb Spurlin had two hits each for the Maroon Tide, both of Spurlin’s being triples.

Jessee Draper had a double and a home run for Pulaski County.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Galax 3, Giles 0: The Maroon Tide took the lead for good late in the first half on a goal by Dominic DiGiacomo and pulled away in the second half for the nondistrict win Tuesday in Pearisburg.

Isaac Jordan scored a pair of second-half goals for Galax (4-0), including one off of a throw-in from Mario Carranza.

Misael Solis registered five saves for Galax, which put 12 shots on goal. Both teams had one goal nullified by a penalty. 

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Galax 6, Carroll County 3: The Maroon Tide won four of the six singles matches and defeated the Cavaliers in a nondistrict match last week in Galax.

Paige Hanks, Susan Davis, Lindsey Ayers and Carleigh Pack were all singles winners for Galax.
