FLOYD -- Carroll County fattened its team batting average considerably last week, knocking the ball around for 34 base hits, including 15 extra-base hits, in softball wins over Marion and Floyd County Thursday in Floyd, Autumn Hill went 4-for-5 with a home run and two doubles as the Cavaliers knocked off the Buffaloes 12-4 in a nondistrict game. Lillie Kimble also had four hits for Carroll County, including a first-inning home run as the Cavaliers took a 4-2 lead. Jordan Nunn had smacked an RBI double earlier in the inning. Carroll County extended its lead to 7-2 by the end of the sixth, then tacked on five runs in the seventh. Emily Hiatt doubled home a run, and Hill added a three-run homer, Nunn and Danielle Spence each had two hits for the Cavaliers. Carroll Co. 18, Marion 1 (5 inn.): Tuesday in Marion, the Cavaliers scored 13 total runs in the second and third innings of a five-inning whipping of the Scarlet Hurricane. Amber Cannaday slugged a two-run triple and scored on Nunn’s triple in a seven-run second inning. The Cavaliers plated six more runs in the third and led 15-1 after four. Hill whacked a solo home run to lead off the sixth and had three hits on the day, as did Nunn and Spence. Cannaday, Kimble and Lindsey Davidson each had two hits, including two doubles by Davidson. Grayson County 3, George Wythe 2: The Blue Devils managed a single run in each the third, fourth and fifth innings to squeak past the Maroons in a nondistrict game Thursday in Wytheville. BOYS’ SOCCER Carroll Co. 4, Richlands 1: A late scoring flurry snapped a 1-1 deadlock and lifted the Cavaliers past the Blue Tornado in a Southwest District game Thursday at Tommy Thompson Field. With the score tied and 25 minutes remaining, Ulises Moreno scored to give Carroll County the lead for good, then added an insurance goal minutes later. Lucas Webb capped the scoring in the final minutes for Carroll County. Galax 1, George Wythe 1: Andrew Storm scored for the Maroons and Fabricio Reyes had the Maroon Tide’s goal as the two teams battled to a draw Thursday in Wytheville. GIRLS’ TENNIS Galax 9, Narrows 0: The Maroon Tide ladies gave up no more than three games in any one match, skunking the Green Wave in a Mountain Empire District match Thursday in Narrows. No. 1 singles player Marie Orton blanked Cayla Dennis 6-0, 6-0 and teamed with Tayler Engelhardt for a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles. BOYS’ TENNIS Galax 8, Narrows 1: The Maroon Tide lost at No. 1 singles but swept the remaining matches, downing the Green Wave in an MED match Thursday in Felts Park. Ryan Williams and Tyler Garman posted 6-0, 6-0 wins while Josh Higgins, Dylan Taylor and Ty Cornett also picked up singles wins. Abbi Ponce had five saves for Galax, which improved to 6-5 with the win. The Maroon Tide hosts Floyd County today (Monday).
