BRIDGEWATER – Carroll County claimed six top-five individual finishes, including two championships, and placed fourth as a team at the Turner Ashby Holiday Tournament last week at Turner Ashby High School.
Blake Bowman and Aaron Willard took individual championships while Jordan Lamb and Andrew Naff brought back runner-up finishes.
Bowman was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler as voted on by the coaches of the 13 teams in attendance after winning the 135-pound class. Bowman reached the semifinals by pinning Marty Ritchie of Turner Ashby and Jabril Canty of Martinsville, then edged Turner Ashby’s Luke Kiser 3-2 to advance to the finals. Blake Wilkerson of Robert E. Lee proved no match for Bowman, who recorded a 13-1 major decision in the title match.
Willard needed two wins to reach the 160-pound finals, pinning Brandon Scully of Stone Bridge and taking a 5-2 decision over Quentin Youngblood of Rockbridge County. Willard also rolled in the finals, scoring an 18-2 technical fall over Martinsville’s T.J. Walker.
Naff (152) and Lamb (140) narrowly missed giving Carroll its third and fourth individual titles, losing 2-1 and 2-0, respectively, in their championship bouts.
Kelly Yelton went 4-2 to place fifth at 171 and Jesse Pedrero was 3-2 en route to a fifth-place showing at 145. Logan McCullum finished sixth at 160 and Bronson Bowman placed seventh at 119.
Led by the four championship round appearances, the Cavaliers racked up 125.50 team points, good enough to tie Amherst County for fourth place. Brookville dominated the team standings with 226.50 points, followed by Turner Ashby (139.50) and Martinsville (135.50).
