Cavs stopped short of SWD title

ABINGDON -- A three-run sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie and lifted Abingdon to a 4-1 win over Carroll County in the Southwest District baseball tournament championship Thursday. The Cavaliers (16-6) had tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning when Jared Cox reached on an error and scored on a base hit by No. 9 batter Adam Nester, but the Falcons took command an inning later. Travis Shrewsbury’s sacrifice fly drove in Heath Shelton with the go-ahead run, and Abingdon added some insurance on a run-scoring infield single by Luke Hilt followed by a Josh Barker’s RBI double. Carroll County lost in important run and, more importantly, some much-needed momentum when an almost unheard-of call went against the Cavaliers in the top of the second. Trailing 1-0 after four walks in the bottom of the first, the Cavaliers appeared to have knotted the score when Jordan Lamb ripped a solo homer, but the run was wiped off the board when it was ruled that Lamb failed to touch home plate. Lamb finished the day with three hits – including what officially became a triple as a result of the call at home. Zach Witt went the distance for Abingdon, allowing the one unearned run on six hits, striking out seven. Carroll County will open Region IV tournament play tomorrow (Tuesday) when the Cavaliers travel to Piedmont District champion Tunstall.   Southwest District finals

Carroll County answered in the bottom of the first when Autumn Hill led off with a single and scored on Lillie Kimble’s two-out triple, but the Cavaliers would manage just three more hits the rest of the way against Tornado pitcher Evan Ferrell. Ferrell and Brady each had an RBI single in a three-run fourth, and Morgan Hill clubbed a solo home run in the fifth for Richlands. Brady went 3-for-5 for Richlands and Hill was 3-for-4 for the Cavaliers, whose season ends at 11-9.
