Cavs hot right off the bat

HILLSVILLE -- It’s common at this time of year, especially with the dearth of outdoor practice time, for pitching to be ahead of hitting. If that is the case, Carroll County has a lot to look forward to offensively.

Playing their season opener, the Cavaliers’ bats were in late-April form as Carroll County pounded Floyd County 14-2 in five innings in a nondistrict game Thursday at Bill Worrell Field.

“I was really pleased with the way we put the bat on the ball,” Carroll County coach Joe Tompkins said. “We hit the ball hard. Most of our hits were line drives, even Adam’s home run.”

Adam Crotts’ homer was a grand slam that highlighted a two-inning outburst in which the Cavaliers put 13 runs on the board. Eight of the first nine Cavaliers to bat in the third reached safely before Crotts lined a laser beam down the leftfield line, capping a nine-run inning.

Crotts had led off the inning by reaching on a misplayed fly ball and Brandon Atwood walked before Matt Fink drove a two-run double into deep right-center. Floyd County reliever Matt Hollandsworth took over and recorded a quick out before the Cavaliers strung together four straight singles, including RBI hits by Jordan Lamb and Jarrod McCombs. Tyler Reavis walked to load the bases, setting up the big fly by Crotts.

The Cavaliers sent 22 batters to the plate in the second and third innings, and Reavis capped the scoring in the fourth, driving home Craig Rosen with a double.

The day didn’t start off so well for the Cavaliers, who trailed 2-0 after committing two second-inning errors. But four two-out runs in the second quickly turned the momentum. Blake Bowman doubled to drive in Fink, who had singled, and Lamb followed Bowman with a two-run single. He later crossed on McCombs’ base hit.

“We got production all the way through the lineup,” Tompkins said. “That’s always a good thing.”

Carroll County pitchers Brett Anauo, Zack Edwards and Alex Ousley teamed up to limit the Buffaloes (0-2) to four hits. The three recorded two strikeouts apiece and combined for just one walk.

Lamb, McCombs, Fink and Bowman each had two hits in Carroll County’s 13-hit attack. Lamb finished with three RBIs while Fink and McCombs drove in two apiece.
