Cavs hammer Cougars in season opener

 STUART –– Carroll County jumped out to a 14-point lead after the first quarter and opened its 2011-12 season by pasting Patrick County 75-22 in a nondistrict game Monday.

The Cavaliers held the Cougars (0-1) to six total points in the middle two periods, leading 42-13 at halftime and 63-15 entering the fourth quarter.

Eight different Cavaliers scored between six and 12 points, led by Wes Smoot’s 12.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

 

Chilhowie 74, Grayson County 56: Camryn McGrady and Meredith Frost combined for  35 points but it wasn’t enough as the Blue Devils opened their season with a nondistrict loss Tuesday in Independence.

McGrady poured in a team-high 21 points and Frost added 14, but Chilhowie’s Danielle Catron lit up the Blue Devils for 32 points to lead the Warriors to the win.
