INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County forced extra innings with a dramatic seventh-inning rally, but Carroll County pushed across a single run in the top of the 10th inning to edge the Blue Devils 3-2 in a nondistrict game Thursday at the Grayson County Rec. Park.

Tied 2-2 after seven innings, each team had a runner reach second in the eighth inning before being doubled up by line drives. After an uneventful ninth inning, Lillie Kimble reached on a fielder’s choice in the 10th, Ragan Halsey doubled and Grace Lindsey’s sacrifice fly to left drove in courtesy runner Bridget Barnes with what would prove to be the winning run.

Autumn Fink scored on a double steal and Lexi Hodge crossed on an Eden Durnil double for the Cavaliers to break a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth. Grayson County, held to two hits through six innings, stayed alive in the top of the seventh when Sarah Eller led off with a walk and Grace Circle slugged a game-tying two-run homer.

Halsey was 4-for-5 for Carroll and Kimble went the distance for the win, striking out 10.

Chilhowie 2, Galax 0: K.K. Murphy accounted for all the offense either team would muster, smacking a two-run homer in the top of the first as the Warriors took a nondistrict win Thursday at Mountain View Park.

Galax pitcher Grace Wilson allowed no hits after the second inning, retiring the final 14 batters she faced. The Maroon Tide managed just four hits off of Chilhowie starter Sarah Caudel.

Carroll County 16, George Wythe 3: The Cavaliers broke the game open with eight runs in the top of the seventh, taking a nondistrict win Wednesday in Wytheville.

Leading 4-3, Carroll County took command with four runs in the fifth, including a two-run single by Autumn Hill.

Eden Durnil and Ashley Willard each had a two-run double in the big seventh inning for Carroll. Willard, Hill and Grace Lindsey each had three hits for the Cavaliers. Five others had two hits apiece.

Patrick County 7, Carroll County 4: The Cavaliers strung together a four-run rally in the fifth but it wasn’t enough to avoid their first loss of the season in a nondistrict game Monday.

Chilhowie 4, Galax 3: The Maroon Tide mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh Thursday before falling short in a nondistrict contest at Felts Park.

Justin Ayers doubled and scored on Bryant Cox’s double to cut Chilhowie’s lead to 4-3, but Marion’s Daniel Creasy shut the door from there to earn the save.

T.J. Lewis had two of the Warriors’ five hits. Tyler Pierce pitched six innings, giving up one earned run on two hits.

Ayers had two hits for the Maroon Tide (1-1).

Tide boys, girls win two each: Galax took a pair of wins by each its boys’ and girls’ teams in nondistrict matches last week.

The Maroon Tide boys dropped a total of three games in downing Carroll County 9-0, then took two of the three doubles matches to get past Pulaski County 6-3.

Dylan Taylor, Ty Cornett, Jacob Patton and Zack Marshall each won two matches in the week.

Galax’s girls also blanked Carroll County 9-0, and followed with a 7-2 win over Pulaski County.

Claire Engelhardt, Paige Hanks, Susan Davis, Taylor Bryant and Victori Kluepfel were all 2-0 in the two nondistrict matches.
