Cavs capture SWD; Grayson ousted in Region C quarters

 HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County used a 16-5 run in the second quarter to turn around a slow start, then held off an Abingdon charge in the second half to win the Southwest District boys’ tournament championship over the Falcons, 65-57 Friday at CCHS.

Wes Smoot had two dunks in the run and finished with 15 points, sharing team honors with Connor Lundy. Ryan Gravley and Gunner Beamer added 12 points each for the Cavaliers (19-4).

Carroll County rallied into a 34-23 halftime lead but watched Abingdon draw even at 37 before pulling back out in front to stay.

Joey Blevins paced the Abingdon rally with 10 third-period points, finishing with 21.

George Wythe 73, Grayson County 58: The Maroons outscored the Blue Devils by 29 points from midway through the second quarter, pulling away to the Region C Division 2 boys quarterfinal win Tuesday in Wytheville.

Grayson County (15-11) led by as many as 14 points in the second period before George Wythe (20-5) turned things around.

Grayson took a 30-25 lead into the half, but Wythe pulled out to a 47-40 lead by the end of the third and continued to pull away down the stretch.

Isaac Baltazar scored 20 points  while Myron Wynn and Hardy Lester each posted a double-double, Wynn with 16 points and 10 rebounds, Lester with 15 points and 12 boards.

Max Rodgers and Ty Cannaday scored 18 points apiece to lead Grayson County and Adam Wyatt added 12.
