GRUNDY ––Carroll County found itself trailing in the opening minutes before exploding for six unanswered touchdowns Friday, rolling to a 41-7 Southwest District win over Grundy at Nelson Memorial Stadium.
Entering the contest on a 16-game district losing streak, Grundy (1-7 overall, 0-4 SWD) jumped to an early lead when Tanner McClanahan returned a Cavalier fumble 30 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead.
The rest of the night belonged to Carroll County (4-4, 2-2). Zack Surratt's two touchdowns and two of Mason King's five PATs helped the Cavaliers take a 14-7 lead. Surratt scored from 19 yards out in the first quarter and added a 4-yard run in the second period following a Lucas Marshall interception and return to the Grundy 19-yard line.
Brandon Huff pushed the lead to 21-7 early in the third quarter on a 25-yard touchdown run, and Cody Mabe soon added the first of his two touchdowns, a 5-yarder for a 27-7 lead after three.
Mabe scored from 20 yards out in the fourth quarter and Levi Goad capped the scoring with his first touchdown of the year, a 10-yard run.
Mabe and Dillon Caviness both reached 100 yards rushing on the night as the Cavaliers piled up 355 yards of total offense, all on the ground. Caviness carried 13 times for 129 yards while Mabe had an even 100 yards on 14 attempts. Surratt finished with 52 yards on 11carries.
