HILLSVILLE –– It took Carroll County a game to get it going but the Cavaliers stormed from behind to pick up their first Southwest District win, 24-26, 25-16, 25-21, 25-20 Thursday over Abingdon.

The Falcons jumped out to a huge lead in the first set before Carroll County (8-5 overall, 1-2 district) tied the game at 23-all. Abingdon won the final two points to take the first set but the momentum from the comeback stayed with the Cavaliers, who evened the match with a 25-16 second-set win.

Ashley Willard racked up 18 kills and 16 serving points, Jessica Sheek served for 18 points and put away seven kills and Morgan Dickens added 19 assists and five kills.

Haven Leland led Abingdon with 11 kills and Taylor Stewart put up 23 assists.

Galax def. Ft. Chiswell 3-0: Allison White and Bailey Shumate combined for 23 kills as the Maroon Tide claimed a 25-18, 25-21, 25-13 win in an MED match Thursday in Max Meadows.

Harley Brewer added eight kills and seven blocks, Taylor Bryant had seven kills and Shumate served for 17 points.

Grayson Co. def. Bland Co. 3-0: Destiny Shupe and Mary Meier each put away eight kills as the Blue Devils rolled the Bears 25-20, 25-17, 25-22 in an MED match Thursday.

Grayson County improved to 11-2 overall, 6-1 in the district with the win.

Galax def. Rural Retreat 3-0: The Maroon Tide didn’t have a huge night in terms of kills but handily put away the Indians 25-14, 25-15, 25-11 in a nondistrict match Wednesday.

Galax registered just 12 kills on the night, getting much of its point total from keen serving and Rural Retreat errors.

Ashley Frye served for 14 consecutive points, including five aces, in the third set and Allison White reeled off seven straight points in game 2.

White and Paige Hanks led the Tide with three kills each. White added 10 digs while Harley Brewer had four blocks.
