HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County trailed Richlands 8-2 in the bottom of the fifth before rallying for a dramatic 9-8 win in a Southwest District baseball game Friday at Bill Worrell Field.

The Cavaliers, who had rallied from a five-run deficit to defeat Grayson County the day before, entered the bottom of the seventh trailing 8-7 when David Reavis lead off by taking a pitch to his helmet and moving up on Blake Bowman’s sacrifice bunt. Tyler Reavis tied the game with an RBI single but was called out after being hit by a ground ball off the bat of Adam Nester, leaving Nester on first with two out. Erick Cox provided the game-winning hit, scoring Nester from first base with a double into the leftfield corner.

Taylor Sizemore clubbed a solo home run and Bradley Strong added a three-run blast as Richlands took a 6-1 lead with six runs in the third. Jarrod McCombs hit a solo shot for the Cavaliers in the bottom of the inning, but the Blue Tornado added two runs in the fifth for an 8-2 lead.

After scoring once in the home fifth, the Cavaliers (7-7 overall, 3-3 district) climbed back to within one in the sixth. Alex Wood led off with a pinch-hit double and Brandon Atwood walked, setting up Adam Crotts’ three-run homer. Crotts and McCombs each had two hits and combined for five RBIs for Carroll.

McCombs pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to earn the win.

The Blue Devils (7-6 overall) scored seven times in the second, thanks to a two-run Jessup Lambert single, a Tyler Rutherford RBI single and a run-scoring groundout by Willie DeBord.

Six more runs crossed in the third, two on a Richard Pugh single.

Rutherford retired the first 10 batters he faced, allowing one hit in a complete game effort. Pugh and Ben Osborne each had two hits and two RBIs.

Tazewell 2, Carroll County 1 (8 innings): The Bulldogs scored one run in each the seventh and eighth innings to hand the Cavaliers a tough loss in an SWD game Thursday in Tazewell.
