Galax had two short-range goals answered by a pair of full-field comebacks by Carroll County as the two teams played to a 2-2 draw in a nondistrict match Friday evening.

The Maroon Tide may have gotten the better end of the deal statistically, outshooting the Cavaliers 22-8 and attempting 12 corner kicks to Carroll’s two, but Galax wasn’t able to translate the advantages into a game-winning goal.

Junior Espinosa gave Galax its first lead 13 minutes into the match when he settled a Leonel Vega corner kick on the back side of the goal and fired into the net for the match’s first score.

Carroll starting goalkeeper Travis Hunter made a pair of saves on Jose Rojas shots, including one that nearly squeaked past Hunter’s deflection before the Carroll netminder wheeled and pounced on the ball inches short of the goal line.

Galax spent a lengthy stay inside Carroll’s 18-yard box before Josh Snow cleared the ball with a booming kick downfield past the Maroon Tide defenders, leading to the Cavaliers’ first goal of the night. Matt Hawks outraced the Tide to Snow’s lead and fired a bullet into the net from 25 yards out to knot the score 13 minutes before the half.

The Maroon Tide maintained the pressure on the Cavalier defense and new keeper Alex Campbell in the early part of the second half and was able to score the go-ahead goal in the 49th minute when Luis Turcios took a throw-in just inside the 18 box and sent a well-placed shot just under the crossbar for a 2-1 lead.

The Cavaliers again answered by racing the length of the field for a tying goal.

Ulises Moreno drilled a goal kick beyond the midfield stripe where it was picked up on the run by the Cavaliers’ Cody Jones. Jones bumped the ball ahead a couple of times before unleashing a 35-yard shot just under the crossbar, again knotting the score 55 minutes in.

Each team had its chances to take the lead in regulation. A direct kick from 25 yards out by Moreno following a Galax hand ball sailed high, and Galax’s Miguel Lopez had a direct kick from about the same distance blocked by Jones for the Cavaliers.

Campbell made a couple of reaction saves on hard shots by the Maroon Tide as the intensity picked up near the end of regulation, but the two teams went to into the double five-minute overtime periods tangled a two goals apiece.

Offensive opportunities were sparse for Carroll in the OT sessions, and the Cavaliers had to work to maintain the tie.

Vega was fouled on a Maroon Tide rush just 10 seconds into the first overtime session, but the infraction came just outside the 18 box and resulted in a direct kick instead of a penalty and Jose Rojas’ DK was high. Campbell made a late stop of Rojas shot late in the first OT, and another late in the second session to preserve the draw.
