Cavaliers 13-0 after wins over Tazewell, Pulaski

TAZEWELL –– Carroll County got off to a hot start but had to hold off a late Tazewell comeback attempt before pulling away for an 83-64 win in a Southwest District boys’ game Tuesday.

The Cavaliers remained unbeaten on the year at 12-0 and improved to 2-0 in SWD play.

Carroll knocked down five 3-pointers in the game’s first six minutes and crafted a 37-20 lead by halftime. Tazewell (6-7, 0-1) battled back and trailed just 48-42 late in the third quarter before the Cavaliers regained the momentum with a 14-0 run.

Ryan Gravley scored 22 points, Cody Keith had 16 and Austin Horton chipped in 10 to pace Carroll County. Jalen Jordan had 21 points and Noah Walker provided 10 points, 11 rebounds and six blocked shots for the Bulldogs.

Carroll County 60, Pulaski County 43: The Cavaliers upped their record to 13-0 on the year by gradually pulling away from the Cougars in a nondistrict game Wednesday in Hillsville.

Connor Lundy led three Carroll County scorers in double figures with 14 points. Ryan Gravley scored 13 and Chris Smoot had a pair of 3-pointers en route to 10 points.

Cameron Merchant’s 11 points were high for Pulaski County.

Grayson County 70, Bland County 55: The Blue Devils used a big third quarter and a solid night from Ty Cannaday Tuesday to knock of the Bears in a Mountain Empire District game in Independence.

Leading 32-28 at halftime, Grayson County (8-4, 2-0) outscored Bland County 19-6 to widen its lead to 51-34 entering the fourth quarter.

Cannaday scored 22 points to go with 10 assists and six rebounds while Mikey Rodgers added 21 points and nine boards. Lucas Mitchell scored 10 for the Blue Devils.

Chase Hankins scored 23 points for the Bears (9-4, 1-1) and Asher Dillow contributed 16.

Tazewell 55, Carroll County 38: The Cavaliers struggled with their shooting touch for the second night in a row and couldn’t erase a big Tazewell lead, falling in a SWD game Tuesday in Tazewell.

Carroll County (7-6, 1-1) led 5-0 before being outscored 34-15 the rest of the half. The Cavaliers were able to cut a 14-point deficit to five points by the fourth quarter but Tazewell (6-6, 1-0) closed the game on a 13-1 run. A night after shooting 22 percent in a loss to Bassett, Carroll outshot Tazewell 28-14 after halftime but was outscored 21-18.

Machala Hash hit three 3-pointers and finished with 17 points for the Cavaliers. Taylor Catron scored 17 for Tazewell, which got 15 from Haley Christian and 14 from Whitney Saunders.

Carroll County 62, Pulaski County 34: The Cavaliers bounced back from their two worst shooting performances of the year by putting up their highest points total of the season, hitting 10 3-pointers and hammering the Cougars in a nondistrict game Wednesday in Dublin.

The win came on the heels of back-to-back losses Monday and Tuesday, and improved Carroll to 8-6 on the year. Pulaski County dropped to 2-10.

Megan Alderman hit three treys and led the way with 13 points while Machala Hash hit four from long rang to score 12 for the Cavaliers, who led 49-18 entering the fourth quarter.

Chelsea Golden scored 13 points to lead the Cougars.

Grayson County 42, Bland County 25: The Blue Devils trailed entering the second quarter before holding the Bears to 15 points the rest of the way, running away with the MED win Wednesday in Independence.

Camryn McGrady and Meredith Frost led the Blue Devils, McGrady with 12 points, eight rebounds and a pair of blocked shots, and Frost with 11 points, five boards and three steals.

The win improved Grayson County to 8-4, 1-1 while dropping Bland County to 2-9, 0-2.
