Willard wins at 160 for Carroll, which will send seven to regionals.

GRUNDY –– Carroll County sent five wrestlers to the championship round but came away with just one individual title Saturday in the Southwest District wrestling tournament at Riverview Elementary School.

Aaron Willard picked up the Cavaliers’ lone championship, pinning Kevin Hale of Graham a minute into the 160-pound title bout. The Cavaliers had a wrestler in the finals in five of the six weight classes from 135 to 171. Carroll’s run in the finals got off to a rocky start when Grundy’s Dakota Vance edged Blake Bowman 3-2 in the 135-pound class.

Jordan Lamb dropped a 10-5 decision to Justin Street of Grundy at 140, and Jesse Pedrero suffered a 5-4 loss to Abingdon’s Grayson Toler in the 145-pound finals.

Following Willard’s win, Kelly Yelton finished second after being pinned by Tyler McClanahan of Grundy.

Andrew Naff scored a 16-1 technical fall victory over Tyler Whitt of Abingdon to place third at 152 pounds, and Joey Rotella finished fourth at 130 after a 13-10 loss to Taylor Meadows of Richlands.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to this weekend’s Region IV tournament, set for Friday and Saturday at Grundy.

The host Golden Wave capped its stay in the Southwest District in much the same fashion as it started. Grundy, in its final year as a Group AA school, won the SWD tournament for the 27th consecutive time and for the 31st time in the tournament’s 35-year history. The Wave won 11 individual championships to rack up 290.5 team points, easily outdistancing runner-up Abingdon (163). Richlands was third with 153 points, followed by Graham (130), Carroll County (120.5), Marion (97) and Tazewell (44).
