HILLSVILLE –– Despite the snowfall that coated area roads last Saturday, conditions improved enough to allow the Carroll County Special Olympics Basketball Classic to go on as planned at Carroll County Intermediate School.

A crowd of nearly 250 came to show support as the team took the floor. The Carroll County Junior ROTC provided the color guard while Krista Neely sang the National Anthem.

Each year for the exhibition, the CCSO squad splits into two teams to play one another. In a thrilling game consisting of four 15-minute quarters, the White team, coached by Toni Hall, pulled out a 49-47 overtime win over the Blue team, coached by Vickey Ritchie.

Adam Joyce provided the color commentary throughout the game and Pike City entertained the crowd at halftime.

The team would like to invite the public to join it on Sunday, Feb. 17 at its tournament at Virginia Tech. Carroll County will split into four teams for the tournament, which will take place at Cassell Coliseum and the Virginia Tech practice facility.
