Carroll places 10 on SWD teams

Carroll County High School had 10 athletes earn first-team all-Southwest District honors in their respective sports for the spring season.

The Cavaliers’ T.J. Martin and Mike Kelly were first-team all-district in baseball, Rebecca Thomas earned first-team recognition in softball and Zack Edwards, Chris Hawks, Zack Surratt, Cynthia Arellano, Jessica Sierra, Laura Arellano and Megan Roper were first-team choices on their respective boys’ and girls’ soccer teams.

In baseball, Martin and Kelly, both juniors, helped lead the Cavaliers to the Region IV tournament where they fell to Blacksburg in the quarterfinals. A third baseman, Kelly led the team in batting and was second in the Twin Counties with a .492 average, going 30-for-61. Kelly scored 13 runs and drove in 18 more, stroking five doubles and five home runs.

Martin, a centerfielder and Carroll County’s leadoff man, was second on the team and third in the Twin Counties with a .475 average, going 38-for-80 on the season. Martin finished the year with 30 runs scored, 12 RBIs, eight doubles, two home runs, 12 stolen bases and just two errors in 53 total chances.

Thomas was an at-large selection on the all-SWD softball first team. A pitcher, the junior finished with a 9-9 record and a 3.18 earned-run average, striking out 121 batters in 118 innings of work. Offensively, she batted .367 (22-for-60) with 11 runs, two triples and a home run.

Seven Cavaliers were first-team choices in soccer. Leading the way in boys’ soccer were Zack Edwards, Chris Hawks and keeper Zack Surratt. First-team picks for the girls were Cynthia Arellano (forward), Jessica Sierra (defender), Laura Arellano (midfielder) and keeper Megan Roper.

Earning second-team status for Carroll County in baseball was Brent Hall (pitcher); in softball, Kelly Coulson (catcher), Leanna Rippey (infield) and Amber Cannaday (infield); in boys’ soccer, Luis Lemus, Gustavo Mar and Asa Gravley; and in girls’ soccer, Sierra Taylor (forward), Lindsey Hamm (defender), Amber Murphy (defender), Leanna Patton (midfielder), Ashley Strickland (midfielder) and Marcie Rosas (midfielder).

Honorable mention picks included baseball players Chris Lineberry, Drew Webb, Tyler Reavis and Cody Robinson, Grace Ayers on the softball team, boys’ soccer players Garreth Surratt, Matt Felts, Roger Perez, Josh Bolt, Koy Worrell, Mikey Payne and Lucas Webb, as well as Lauren Roper, Sarah Broyles and Saira Hernandez off the girls’ soccer team.

Southwest District players of the year were Jordan Barnett of Richlands (baseball), Kendra Hooker of Abingdon and Lindsey Lester of Richlands (softball), Maggie Jones of Graham and Abbey Kitts of Tazewell (girls’ soccer) and Neil Henry of Abingdon (boys’ soccer).
