Carroll girls rally past Pulaski, Tide girls pick up first win

DUBLIN -- Carroll County overcame an early 10-point deficit and remained undefeated with a 63-53 win over Pulaski County in a nondistrict girls’ game Monday night. The Cougars (0-3) jumped on the Cavaliers (3-0) early, leading 18-8 after the first period, but Carroll County began working its way back in the second quarter, eventually taking the lead in the third by outscoring Pulaski County 19-9. Rachel Dalton hit four 3-pointers to spark the third-quarter rally. The sophomore would sink six treys on the night, finishing with a career-high 24 points. Fellow sophomore Lindsey Martin added 10 points, seven rebounds and five steals, while Kayla Goins scored 14 points to go with nine rebounds and six assists.   Carroll County........8  16  19  20––63 Pulaski County......18  12   9   14––53

Galax (1-2) led 31-17 by halftime and continued pulling away in the second half. Eight of the Tide's nine players hit the scoring column, led by double-figure efforts by Bailey Shumate (16 points), Allison White (12 points) and Hailey Cassell (11 points). Channing Russell also had a big game for the Maroon Tide, picking Holston apart defensively with 11 steals and dishing out eight assists to go with seven points. Grayson County (0-3) took an 8-4 lead after the first eight minutes, but Rural Retreat outscored the Blue Devils 13-4 in the second to take a five-point halftime lead, which it would maintain to the finish. Oak Hill jumped on Galax in the first and third periods, taking a 22-15 lead after eight minutes and outscoring the Tide 22-5 in the third to enter the final quarter with a 59-31 lead. R.J. Currington scored 14 points in the fourth quarter and led the Warriors with 27 points. Chris Kiros and Stephen Aciena added 11 points apiece. Three-point field goals – Galax 7 (George 4, Hash 3), Oak Hill 3 (Currington 2, Porter).   WRESTLING   Galax opens with pair of wins: The Galax wrestling team opened its 2009-10 season with a pair of nondistrict wins last Thursday, knocking off Marion 38-34 and Rural Retreat 52-21 at Galax High School. Against the Scarlet Hurricane, the Maroon Tide got pins by Ethan Campbell (119 pounds), Dante Ravenell (135), Jose Rojas (140) and Jose Martinez (152). Defending state champion Edu Rojas recorded a technical fall  at 125 pounds and Juan Hernandez held on for a 5-4 decision at 160. In the Maroon Tide’s second match, 10 of the 14 bouts were decided by either pin or forfeit. Winning by pin for Galax were Campbell, Ravenell, Rojas, Ivan Bates (189), and Bryton McKinney (275). Darian Sizemore won by major decision at 145 while Martinez and Hernandez also won by decision. “The kids wrestled well and are showing a lot of promise,” Galax assistant coach Troy Barkley said. “We have the majority of the team back from last year and the varsity experience shows.” Galax is currently ranked No. 2 in Group A behind Glenvar.
