Carroll girls open season with impressive win

The third-ranked Cavaliers ran over No. 10 Patrick County by 22 in their season opener.

HILLSVILLE -- Carroll County pulled away in the final three quarters and notched an impressive 71-49 win over Patrick County in a nondistrict game Wednesday. It was the season opener for both schools. Carroll County, ranked No. 3 in the Roanoke Times preseason poll, broke an 18-18 tie in the second quarter, outscoring the 10th-ranked Cougars 37-25 in the middle two quarters. Lindsey Martin canned four 3-pointers and led all scorers with 23 points, and Kayla Goins tossed in 18 for the Cavaliers. Auburn went into the fourth quarter with a 26-23 lead before picking up the pace and outscoring Grayson 16-6 down the stretch. Holly Saul scored six of her game-high 14 points in the fourth quarter. Kennedy Gambill knocked down seven 3-pointers and finished with 30 points for Alleghany, which took the lead by outscoring Galax 19-4 in the third quarter. Elizabeth Harris added 11 points for the Warriors. Bubba Bowen scored eight points and Grayson County drained three 3-pointers in the first quarter as the Blue Devils (1-1) jumped out to a 26-18 lead. Leading by 10 at halftime, Grayson County pushed its advantage to 18 points by the start of the fourth quarter. Eric Harvey led four scorers in double figures with 27 points for the Blue Devils, who got 16 points from Bowen, 12 from Steven Eller and 10 from freshman Mikey Rodgers. Patrick County led 10-8 before outscoring Carroll County 23-14 in the second. Jacob Reynolds led the three Cougars in double figures with 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Marcus Wood pulled down 10 rebounds.
