Carroll girls hand Tazewell first SWD loss

HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County took a must-win game over Southwest District leader Tazewell Wednesday by holding the Bulldogs to 11 second-half points in the 45-38 victory.

The Cavaliers (11-8 overall, 4-2 district) kept their district championship hopes alive by handing the Bulldogs (10-7, 4-1) their first SWD loss of the year.

Taylor Martin scored 15 points and Crysta Guynn hit four 3-pointers and had 14 points for Carroll County, which pulled away from a 27-27 halftime deadlock.

Nobody scored more than seven points for Tazewell.

Galax 58, Fort Chiswell 41: The Maroon Tide outscored the Pioneers 36-15 in the second half to notch a big Mountain Empire District win Wednesday in Galax.

The Maroon Tide leapfrogged Fort Chiswell for the No. 2 spot in the MED standings with a game against league-leading Grayson County set for tonight (Friday).

Galax rallied from a 26-22 halftime deficit into a 41-38 lead by the end of the third quarter, and dominated the fourth, outscoring the Pioneers 17-3.

Sydney Lindsey led all scorers with 23 points, going 11-of-11 from the foul line, and grabbed 18 rebounds to lead Galax. Fort Chiswell was led by Sarah Whisman’s 17 points.

Carroll County 59, Oak Hill Red 51: The Cavaliers had to rally in the fourth quarter to remain undefeated on the year, overtaking the Warriors in a nondistrict game Tuesday in Hillsville.

Carroll County improved to 18-0 on the year by handing Oak Hill Red just its second loss of the season.

The Cavaliers outscored OHA 16-6 in the final eight minutes, hitting 11-of-12 foul shots during that stretch, to turn around what had been a two-point Warrior lead.

Ryan Gravley led all scorers with 22 points and Gunnar Beamer added 13 points for Carroll County. Scott King scored 14 points for Oak Hill.

Fort Chiswell 50, Galax 40: The Pioneers broke open a tight game in the third quarter and held on for the MED win Wednesday in Galax.

Trailing 24-21 at halftime, Fort Chiswell outscored the Maroon Tide 15-4 in the third quarter to take control of the game.

Chase Rathbone and Coleman Thomas led Fort Chiswell with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Caleb Bartlett hit four 3-pointers and scored a career-high 14 points to pace Galax.

Grayson County 65, Bland County 48: The Blue Devils had to rally in the fourth quarter to remain undefeated in MED play, edging the Bears Tuesday in Rocky Gap.

Bland County jumped out to a 20-15 first-quarter lead and was ahead 48-46 in the fourth quarter before Grayson County turned it up and outscored the Bears 19-10 down the stretch.

Ty Cannaday’s 18 points led four Blue Devils in double figures, while Max Rodgers scored 17. Lucas Rudy and Landon Frost added 11 and 10, respectively.

Darryl Clark (21 points) and Asher Dillow (18) led Bland County.
