RADFORD –– Carroll County Special Olympics spent a very windy but sunny Saturday at Radford University’s Cupp Stadium on April 20 for the Annual Area 9 Spring Games. They competed in track and field events against teams from Mount Rogers Wythe IDC, Mount Rogers Twin Co IDC, Carroll House, NRV IDA, Pulaski County, and the Southwestern Virginia Training Center.

Radford City police officers participated in opening ceremonies and CCSO athlete LaRae Hall led everyone in the Special Olympics oath.

Carroll County Special Olympics had 35 team members present and many friends and family members along for support.

Competition began at 9 a.m. with shot put and ended after 4 p.m. with relay races. Radford University athletic teams and college students from RU and Virginia Tech participated in awards presentations, timing, measuring distance, and also volunteered as buddies for the athletes.

Carroll County’s track season continues with practices and two more events. On Sunday, May 5, CCSO will host a Track and Field Little Feet Meet for area special needs children ages 2 to 10 at the Carroll County High School track in Hillsville. (Exceptions in age can be made as long as Coach Vickey Ritchie is contacted before the event.) Team members will help the kids through throwing, kicking, and jumping events and time them in races.

Weather permitting, the team will also present their second Reading Around the Track event afterwards. Rain date is May 12.

Then on Sunday, June 2, Carroll County will host the Annual CCSO Track and Field Classic from 2 to 5 pm at CCHS. The public is invited to come and cheer as these athletes show their ability rather than focusing on any disability.
