Cavs reach SWD finals, earn Region IV spot

By

HILLSVILLE -- Carroll County scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth off of fireballing Tazewell lefthander Zak Wasilewski and held on for a 3-2 win in the Southwest District baseball tournament semifinals Tuesday at Bill Worrell Field.

Cavalier starting pitcher Adam Crotts allowed just three hits all day, but two of them were solo homeruns by Wasilewski, including one in the top of the sixth that put Tazewell ahead 2-1.

Jordan Lamb drew a walk and took second on a wild pitch in the decisive sixth inning, and Dillon Bryant’s double brought in Lamb with the tying run. Bryant scored the eventual game-winning run on a base hit by Jared Cox, and Crotts had a 1-2-3 seventh seal the win.

Crotts singled with two outs in the bottom of the first and scored on a Bryant infield single but Tazewell knotted the score on Wasilewski’s first homer, in the top of the fourth.

Taylor Herald followed with a double off Crotts, but those were the only hits allowed on the day by the big Cavalier righty, who struck out 14 and issued no walks in tossing his fourth straight complete-game victory.

Carroll County traveled to Abingdon for the SWD title game Thursday and will advance to the Region IV tournament next week.
