HILLSVILLE –– Eddie Sloss has been named the new head football coach at Carroll County High School, following his approval by the school board in its monthly meeting Tuesday night.
Sloss, a Blacksburg native, was the defensive coordinator at Christiansburg High School this past season after a nine-year stint as an assistant at Blacksburg High and one year at Auburn.
“There were several quality candidates that interviewed for the position and we were very impressed with the pool,” said Carroll County High principal Chuck Thompson in a statement released Tuesday afternoon. “Given his background as a player and coach, we are hopeful that coach Sloss can move the program forward.”
As a senior in high school, Sloss was a member of the 1989 Group AA state championship team at Blacksburg High. He was a member of the baseball team at Ferrum College before transferring to and graduating in 1995 with a Health and Physical Education degree from Radford University.
Sloss was an assistant JV coach at Auburn as an undergraduate and played three years with the Roanoke Rush semiprofessional football team before taking a position with Roanoke City Schools. Sloss was the middle school coach at Patrick Henry before becoming the head junior varsity coach for two seasons at Middleburg (Fla.) High School.
Sloss returned to the Roanoke Valley and was the head JV coach at Patrick Henry before spending nine seasons on the staff of head coach Dave Crist at Blacksburg High.
Sloss also was the head softball coach at Blacksburg after serving as the head JV baseball coach under Jim Shockley for the Bruins. He also coached freshman basketball at Patrick Henry.
“He comes to us with high reccomendations and good ideas,” Thompson’s statement continued. “I am looking forward to seeing these ideas implemented. We anticipate him meeting with the staff and student-athletes in the near future.”
Sloss was scheduled to be publicly introduced Wednesday afternoon at CCHS but the news conference was cancelled due to the weather. An interview with the new Cavalier head coach should appear in Monday’s edition.
