Carroll County, Grayson County earn district sweeps

MAX MEADOWS –– Koby Hill hit a shot at the buzzer to lift Grayson County to a 54-52 win over Fort Chiswell in a Mountain Empire District boys’ game Friday.

The Blue Devils (5-10 overall, 2-2 district) took a 41-37 lead into the fourth quarter before the Pioneers (7-5, 1-2) rallied.

Hill finished with 12 points for the Blue Devils, who got a game-high 18 points from Max Rodgers. Ty Cannaday added 13 points for Grayson.

Fort Chiswell was paced by Garrison Byus with 13 points. Dylan Hale scored 11 and Austin Widelo added 10.

Carroll County 54, Blacksburg 49: The Cavaliers used a strong second quarter to take command, and held off the Bruins in a River Ridge District game Friday in Blacksburg.

Trailing by two after the first quarter, Carroll County (12-3, 7-1) outscored Blacksburg 16-7 in the second period for a 27-20 halftime lead.

Connor Lundy led a balanced scoring attack for the Cavaliers with 13 points while Cody Keith, Winston Giles and Blake Dalton added 10 points apiece.

Blacksburg (2-13, 1-7) was led by Grayson Shelton with 16 points.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Grayson County 64, Fort Chiswell 57: Led by a combined 45 points from Meredith Frost and Camryn McGrady, the Blue Devils came on strong in the second half and rallied their way to an MED win Friday in Max Meadows.

Trailing by six in the second quarter and down 32-29 at the half, Grayson County (9-6, 4-1) outscored Fort Chiswell 35-25 over the final two periods.

Frost led all scorers with 24 points and McGrady tossed in 21 for the Blue Devils.

Sadie Smith and Savannah Dunford led Fort Chiswell with 15 and 12 points, respectively.

Carroll County 45, Blacksburg 26: The Cavaliers picked up steam as the night wore on and pulled away from the Bruins in a RRD game Friday in Hillsville.

Leading just 9-7 after eight minutes, Carroll County (13-2, 8-0) held Blacksburg (8-7, 3-4) to 19 points over the final three quarters and outscored the Bruins 22-9 in the second half, including 12-1 in the fourth quarter.

The Cavaliers’ Keely Lundy scored 21 points to lead all scorers. Chris Martin had 10 points for Blacksburg.
