MAX MEADOWS -- Grayson County wasted a six-run lead but was still able to throw a wrench into the Mountain Empire District baseball standings, knocking off league leader Fort Chiswell 8-7 in an eight-inning thriller Tuesday. The Pioneers rallied from being down 7-1 in the middle of the fourth and knotted the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the seventh. Dustin Leonard led off the top of the eighth with a walk and scored the eventual winning run on a sacrifice fly from Brent Graham. Fort Chiswell left the tying run on third base in the bottom of the eighth, thanks in part to a pick-off at first for the second out of the inning. Grayson County scored three runs in the first on no hits, drawing four walks and two hit batters off of Pioneer starter Mike Dunford, who lasted a third of an inning. Jared Salts homered in the second and the Blue Devils added two runs in each of the next two innings, with Tyler Rutherford smacking a two-run single in the third, followed by RBI singles from Leonard and Brent Graham in the fourth. Rutherford pitched the final two innings and picked up the win. Salts, Leonard and Warren had two hits each for Grayson. The loss was Fort Chiswell’s first in district play. The Pioneers face once-beaten Galax today (Friday) for sole possession of first place.
