Carroll County girls shut down Magna Vista

 HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County held Magna Vista to 11 points over the final three quarters and pounded the Warriors 50-24 in a nondistrict girls’ game Friday.

The Cavaliers (6-4) led 17-13 after the first quarter and blanked Magna Vista in the second period to take a 31-13 halftime lead.

Ten different Cavaliers found their way into the scoring column, led by Machala Hash’s 12 points.

Chilhowie 52, Grayson County 37: The Warriors held the Blue Devils to seven total points in the middle two quarters and pulled away for a nondistrict win Friday in Independence.

Leading 17-14 after the first period, Chilhowie (10-2) outscored Grayson 17-2 to take a 34-16 halftime lead. The Warriors built their lead to 44-21 by the end of the third period.

Danielle Catron led Chilhowie with 19 points and McKenzie Sabo added 16. Grayson County was led by Meredith Frost with nine points.

Carroll County 71, George Wythe 42: The Cavaliers knocked down 10 3-pointers while holding the Maroons to 11 total field goals Thursday, rolling to the nondistrict win in the First Bank of Virginia Classic at Fort Chiswell High School.

Connor Lundy had four treys and led four Cavaliers in double figures with 14 points. Ryan Gravley hit three 3-pointers and scored 12, Blake Dalton scored 11 points, all in the fourth quarter, and Gunner Beamer tossed in 10 points.

Radford 70, Grayson County 44: The Bobcats dominated after the first quarter Thursday to win the opening round in the First Bank of Virginia Classic at Fort Chiswell High School.

The Blue Devils (5-2) took an 18-15 lead into the second period but were outscored 55-26 the rest of the way and finished 32 points below their season scoring average.

Nate Jones scored 16 of his game-high 23 points in the second half for Radford (7-1). Dee Cook added 10 points for the Bobcats.

Grayson County got 21 points from Max Rodgers, 17 coming in the first half.

S.Stokes, N.C. 59, Galax 45: The Maroon Tide was outscored 35-16 in the middle two quarters, dropping a nondistrict decision Friday at Alleghany High School in Sparta.

Galax (1-6) took a 15-13 lead into the second quarter before the Sauras (7-3) pulled away.

The Maroon Tide knocked down eight 3-pointers and got 10 points from both Chandler Quesenberry and Dominic DiGiacomo.

South Stokes was paced by Grant Joyce with 17 points.

Galax’s first game in the two-day event was cancelled when an independent team from Raleigh pulled out the morning of the game.
