Carroll County girls clinch Southwest title

Fort Chiswell knocks off Galax girls twice to lock up Mountain Empire.

TAZEWELL –– Carroll County secured the Southwest District girls’ basketball championship Saturday, running past Tazewell 56-33.

The Cavaliers improved to 10-0 in the district, 14-4 overall, and earned the right to host the SWD tournament.

Carroll County again got the job done defensively, holding an opponent to 38 points or fewer for the sixth time in the past seven games. The Cavaliers have limited opponents to single-digit scoring in a quarter nine times in the past 12 quarters.

Maleah Neely scored 11 points and Lindsay Martin added 10 for Carroll County. Iesha Mountain scored 21 for the Bulldogs (8-11, 3-7).

Fort Chiswell 47, Galax 34: The Pioneers used a dominant second half to rally for the win, clinching the Mountain Empire District championship Monday in Max Meadows.

Galax (9-10, 4-3) led 17-5 after the first quarter but would manage just 17 points the rest of the night. Fort Chiswell (13-4, 7-0) took a 34-32 lead by the end of the third period and outscored Galax 13-2 down the stretch to pull away.

Sarah Whisman had 21 points and 14 rebounds to lead Fort Chiswell and Carlytta Hamm scored 10.

Galax was led by Bailey Shumate and Hailey Cassell with 11 points each.

Chilhowie 53, Grayson County 25: The Warriors got 22 points from Danielle Catron and handed the Blue Devils a nondistrict loss Monday in Chilhowie.

Catron hit four 3-pointers for Chilhowie, which improved to 12-8 with the win.

Erin Barrett paced the Blue Devils (0-17) with 10 points.

Fort Chiswell 54, Galax 44: The Pioneers locked up at least a tie for the Mountain Empire District championship behind Carlytta Hamm’s 25 points Saturday in Galax.

Fort Chiswell (12-4, 6-0) owned the first and third quarters. Hamm scored 12 as the Pioneers took an 18-12 lead in the first, and Nancy Thacker had 13 points in the third as Fort led 44-30. Thacker finished with 20 points.

Taylor Bryant led Galax with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Laken Blevins led all scorers with 10 points for Alleghany. Lucy Phipps scored five to lead the Blue Devils.

Grayson County 68, Chilhowie 45: The Blue Devils took the early lead and gradually pulled away in a nondistrict game Monday in Chilhowie.

Eric Harvey led all scorers with 23 points for Grayson County (15-4). Adam Cornett tossed in 12 and Ty Cannaday added 10.

Connor Hayden led the Warriors (9-11) with 17 points.

Carroll County 94, Tazewell 76: The Cavaliers maintained their hold on second place in the SWD with an easy win Saturday in Tazewell.

Carroll County (11-7, 6-3) jumped out to a 20-11 lead after the first quarter and held the nine-point lead to the half.

Ryan Gravley and Mac Martin led five Cavalier scorers in double figures with 20 points apiece. Connor Lundy scored 13, all in the first half, Kody Alley chipped in 12 points and Austin Horton added 10.

Tazewell’s John Walker scored 27 points to lead all scorers and Brad Rhudy added 23.

Grayson County 70, Alleghany 65: Only four Blue Devils scored but it was enough to knock off the Trojans in a nondistrict game Saturday in Independence.

Mikey Rodgers led all scorers with 24 points for Grayson County (14-4), which rallied from a 32-22 halftime deficit.

Tyler Rutherford provided 11 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists and six steals, Eric Harvey scored 18 points and Adam Cornett added 17 points for Grayson.

Jeremy Mabe led four Trojans in double figures with 16 points.
