Carroll County falls short at Bassett

 BASSETT –– Carroll County came up just short again against one of the top girls’ teams in Timesland, falling to Bassett 51-50 in a nondistrict battle Monday night.

The loss dropped the Cavaliers to 3-3 on the season, with the three defeats coming by an average of 3.6 points to teams ranked in the Roanoke Times preseason top five.

Carroll County took a 40-37 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Bengals (5-1) took the lead for good on two Tahira Scales free throws with 11 seconds to play. The Cavaliers had a shot to win fall away at the buzzer.

Simone Venable led three Bassett scorers in double figures with 15 points. Kaliya Barbour scored 11 and Scales finished with 10.

Taylor Martin led Carroll County with 13 points.

Galax 44, Pulaski County 35: The Maroon Tide dominated the fist half and bounced back from consecutive losses to drop the Cougars in a nondistrict game Monday in Galax.

Galax (2-2) took a 28-13 lead into the half against winless Pulaski County (0-3) and stretched its advantage to 41-23 by the start of the fourth quarter.

Sydney Lindsey came up huge for the Maroon Tide, pumping in 20 points to go with 17 rebounds. Jordan Chrisley scored nine points to lead the Cougars.

Northwood 60, Grayson County 53: The Panthers handed the Blue Devils their first loss after a 3-0 start, taking the nondistrict win last week in Independence.

Kelsey Puckett led four scorers in double figures for Northwood (2-2) with 16 points. Camryn McGrady’s 15 points were high for Grayson County, Meredith Frost scored 14 and Sarah Eller chipped in with 10 points.

Pulaski County 47, Galax 36: In Galax, the Maroon Tide went cold in the second half and remained winless on the year Monday with its second nondistrict loss to the Cougars.

Galax (0-3) took a 22-19 lead into the half against Pulaski County (2-3) but managed just 14 points in the second half as the Cougars pulled in front and then pulled away.

Cameron Merchant led Pulaski County with 10 points while Chandler Quesenberry and Steven Peoples had 10 points apiece for the Maroon Tide.
