Carroll County breaks through with SWD win

The Cavaliers snapped a seven-game slide by taking a big early lead and holding off Tazewell 69-60.


 TAZEWELL -- Carroll County snapped a seven-game losing streak and won for the first time this year in Southwest District play, holding off Tazewell 69-60 last Wednesday at Tazewell Middle School.

The Cavaliers (2-14 overall, 1-6 district) led by as many as 20 points in the second half before staving off a late rally by the Bulldogs (3-10, 1-5). Jeremiah Jessee and Blaine Hancock combined to score 16 points in the fourth quarter as Tazewell closed to within seven points before the comeback lost steam. Carroll County never trailed after opening the game on a 9-0 run, holding Tazewell scoreless for more than four minutes. The Bulldogs were able to close to within three points, 13-10, but the Cavaliers regained control and built a 33-17 lead by halftime. Brandon Noonkester led four scorers in double figures with 20 points for the Cavaliers. Tyler Reavis scored 14 while Adam Crotts and Eric Marshall added 10 points apiece. Tazewell was led by Jeremiah Jessee’s 24 points, and Blake Hancock scored 14. Carroll County effectively shut down Tazewell’s outside game, holding the Bulldogs to a pair of 3-pointers. Tazewell had hit 10 treys, including nine by John Walker, in a 93-90 win over Richlands a week earlier.   Carroll County......13  20  16  20––69 Tazewell................8    9   18  25––60
