HILLSVILLE — Carroll deputies received a report of a person who had been run over by a vehicle near the intersection of Mill Stone and Elkhorn roads last Wednesday around 4 p.m., leading to one arrest, according to Sheriff J.B. Gardner.

“While deputies were responding to the scene, the caller, Dana Martin, reported to dispatch that she and her husband, John Lephew, had gotten back into their vehicle and were in route to Twin County Regional Hospital after her husband had been run over by a former boyfriend, Chadrick William Hutchens,” the sheriff said in a March 20 news release.
The caller further told dispatchers that Hutchens had followed her on the way to the hospital and tried “to run her vehicle off the road with her husband, her and her two children, 7 and 5, still inside the car,” the news release said.
Sgt. Cody Edwards met Martin at the hospital and got a statement, while other deputies searched the Pipers Gap area for the suspect’s pickup.
They located it on Mallory Road, which led to Hutchens, 34, of Woodlawn being charged with felony malicious wounding of Lephew, two misdemeanor counts of assault and battery, destruction of property and reckless driving, Gardner said.
Hutchens was taken to the New River Valley Regional Jail.
