HILLSVILLE — An assault on a police officer and the forgery of checks led to arrests in separate incidents investigated by the Hillsville Police Department over the weekend.
Town officers reported arresting a Hillsville man — Benjamin S. Keatts, no age given — after a 911 call Saturday.
Though Keatts initially left a home after being asked to, he returned and attempted to force his way past responding officers and re-enter the home, police said in a news release.
When officers blocked his path, Keatts began cursing and pushing them, police said. Officers arrested Keatts after a struggle.
They charged him with assault and battery of a police officer, attempting to intimidate or impede by threats of bodily harm or to force a police officer engaged in his duties, both felonies.
Keatts also faces misdemeanor charges of obstruction of justice and curse and abuse.
Sgt. Wesley Yonce and Officer Ricky Hayes conducted the investigation.
Keatts was taken to New River Valley Regional Jail and held pending a court hearing.
On Friday, Hillsville police charged Corey Daniel Payne, 18, of Lambsburg after investigating the theft and forgery of checks belonging to a Galax resident.
Payne faces two counts each of forgery, uttering and obtaining money by false pretenses, all felonies, police said.
Payne is being held in Surry County Jail in Dobson, N.C., pending extradition to Carroll County.
Sgt. James Alderman Jr. is in charge of this investigation.
