Galax Elks Lodge #2212 will have a representative in the State Elks Hoop Shoot in Charlottesville this weekend.
Caleb Burris won the 10-11 boys’ division in the Southwest District Hoop Shoot to qualify for the state tournament.
Burris is a student at Gladeville Elementary School and is the son of Ricky and Sarah Burris. He won the honor of representing the Galax area by winning the local contest. Other local students that placed in the Southwest District contest were Elizabeth Combs (second place, 8-9 girls), Johanah Gallimore (third place, 12-13 girls) and Chandler Quesenberry (third place, 12-13 boys).
The Southwest District includes lodges in Pulaski, Roanoke, Bedford, Martinsville, Clifton Forge, Galax, Danville and Lynchburg. Other district winners were Justina Wood of Bedford (8-9 girls), Austin Douglas of Clifton Forge (8-9 boys), Erin Saunders of Bedford (10-11 girls), Claudia Morris of Martinsville (12-13 girls) and Tyler Lucy of Bedford (12-13 boys).
Douglas and Lucy were both a perfect 25-of-25 from the foul line in winning their divisions. Lucy was actually a perfect 30-for-30, as he made all five practice shots before shooting for his score. It was the best show of foul shooting the contest had seen in several years.
Burris and his family will travel to Charlottesville Saturday for the Sunday contest. All expenses will be paid by Galax Elks Lodge #2212. State winners will advance to Frederick, Md., with all expenses paid by the Virginia Elks Association.
More than 3 million students will have competed before the six national winners are determined. Almost 5,000 students competed in the local contests in Southwest Virginia.
