The Galax City School Board will seek citizen input on the qualifications they desire in a new schools superintendent.

The board has started the process of hiring a new superintendent to replace Sam Cook, who will retire at the end of 2008. Cook has been a superintendent of Galax schools since July 1, 1996, and is retiring after more than 42 years in public education.

“The selection of a superintendent is the most important job of any school board,” said School Board Chairman Ray Kohl. “We want the input of our citizens in making this important decision. Therefore, we are asking interested citizens to attend our meeting on Oct. 14 to provide their input.”

The school board also began advertising the superintendent's position.

Applications are available at the school board office on Long Street or by visiting www.gcps.k12.va.us/employmentapplications.aspx.

The school board will accept applications through Nov. 15.

• Next Tuesday's school board meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Galax High School.
