INDEPENDENCE –– Garrett Bailey and Michael Vaughan made a game of it, but the Grayson County duo was not able to complete the comeback and fell to Tanner Fox and Mehmed Numanovich of Parry McCluer in the Region C doubles championship Wednesday at Grayson County High School.
The loss ended the season for Blue Devil tennis, which dropped a 5-2 decision to Parry McCluer in the team semifinals earlier in the day.
Bailey and Vaughan won their semifinal match Tuesday, 6-4, 7-5 over Tyler Haynie and Alex Dunkenberger of Glenvar, and took an undefeated record into Wednesday’s doubles finals. Fox and Numanovich pulled away for a 6-4 first-set win and led 4-2 in the second before Bailey and Vaughan rallied for a 7-5 win. The Parry McCluer pair nailed down the win, 6-4 in the third set.
Earlier in the day, the Fighting Blues took four of the six singles matches and iced the team win with a victory at No. 3 doubles.
Bailey bounced back from a first-set loss and defeated Fox 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles while teammate Brent Hawks eased past Jordan Smith 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles for the Devils’ two team points.
