INDEPENDENCE –– Garrett Bailey and Michael Vaughan made a game of it, but the Grayson County duo was not able to complete the comeback and fell to Tanner Fox and Mehmed Numanovich of Parry McCluer in the Region C doubles championship Wednesday at Grayson County High School.

The loss ended the season for Blue Devil tennis, which dropped a 5-2 decision to Parry McCluer in the team semifinals earlier in the day.

Bailey and Vaughan won their semifinal match Tuesday, 6-4, 7-5 over Tyler Haynie and Alex Dunkenberger of Glenvar, and took an undefeated record into Wednesday’s doubles finals. Fox and Numanovich pulled away for a 6-4 first-set win and led 4-2 in the second before Bailey and Vaughan rallied for a 7-5 win. The Parry McCluer pair nailed down the win, 6-4 in the third set.

Earlier in the day, the Fighting Blues took four of the six singles matches and iced the team win with a victory at No. 3 doubles.

Bailey bounced back from a first-set loss and defeated Fox 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles while teammate Brent Hawks eased past Jordan Smith 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles for the Devils’ two team points.

Galax 5, Parry McCluer 2: In a match continued from Tuesday, the Maroon Tide pulled away from the Blues thanks to another hat trick by Andres Medina in a quarterfinal match at Grayson County High School.

The Galax scoring machine tallied his sixth straight hat trick as the Maroon Tide advanced to Thursday’s region semifinals in Bluefield.

Parry McCluer took a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the match Tuesday before Galax responded with a Medina goal and two more from Junior Espinosa.

Heavy rain halted play with about five minutes left in the first half. Resuming play Wednesday, the Fighting Blues cut the Galax lead to 3-2 with a penalty kick, but Medina scored two more times to ice the win for the Maroon Tide.

Galax (17-1-1) played James River yesterday (Thursday) at the East River Soccer Complex in Bluefield, while Giles and Radford met in another semifinal. The winners of those two matches play tonight (Friday) at 6 in Bluefield. Both semifinal winners will advance to the Group A tournament.
