RADFORD –– The Grayson County Blue Sox 9-under baseball team won the 2010 USSSA state championship May 30.
The Sox trailed Wythe County 6-0 in the second inning of their opening game before rebounding to post a 17-9 victory. Game 2 pitted Grayson County against Buena Vista, with the Blue Sox taking a 6-3 decision.
After drawing a bye in the first round of Day 2, the Blue Sox faced Johnson City, Tenn., and scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to remain undefeated for the tournament, advancing to the semifinals.
The Virginia Jaxx from Roanoke were Grayson County’s semifinal opponent and fell to the Sox 13-5, sending Grayson into the championship game against the Botetourt Cavs, the top-ranked team in the state in their division.
The Blue Sox defeated Botetourt 12-10 in the finals to claim their second straight state championship, matching the 8-under title from a year ago.
The event was open to surrounding states and hosted a dozen 9-under teams from Virginia, West Virginia and Tennessee.
Blue Sox team members are Eli Anderson, Dylan Brown, Brandt Caldwell, Shawn Campbell, Crue Cassell, Christian Grimes, Jake Hollingsworth, Alex Pruitt, Tyler Thompson and Hunter Widner.
The team is coached by Zeke Anderson, Matt Campbell, Mack Cassell and Tim Hollingsworth.
