Blue Devils recover from shootout to drop Warriors

 INDEPENDENCE –– A night after a 221-point gasser, Grayson County pulled away in the second half to top Chilhowie 64-45 in a nondistrict boys game Tuesday night.

Grayson County (3-2) may have been feeling the effects of a furiously-paced 113-108 loss to Floyd County the previous evening and led just 25-23 at the break, then outscored the Warriors 39-24 the rest of the way.

Eric Harvey and Tyler Rutherford both posted a double-double, Harvey with 22 points and 10 rebounds and Rutherford with 15 and 14.

Jonathan Hayden’s 11 points were high for Chilhowie.

Carroll County 76, Richlands 62:The Cavaliers exploded for 31 third-quarter points and rallied past the Blue Tornado for a Southwest District win Monday in Richlands.

Trailing 29-26 at intermission, the Cavaliers built a 12-point lead by the end of the third period and held it the rest of the way.

Ryan Gravley led four Cavaliers in double figures with 21 points and Mac Martin tossed in 16. Wes Smoot and Austin Horton added 15 and 10, respectively.

Austin Johnson led Richlands with 19 points.

Chilhowie 43, Grayson County 19:The Warriors pressed their way past the Blue Devils in a nondistrict game Tuesday in Independence.

Holding Grayson County to nine first-half points, Chilhowie pulled away from a six-point lead in the second half.

Kristin Caudill scored 12 points to lead the Warriors. Sarah Eller had four points and nine rebounds for Grayson County.

Carroll County 51, Richlands 49:Rachel Dalton’s basket with six seconds left was the difference as the Cavaliers edged the Blue Tornado in a SWD game Monday in Richlands.

Carroll County trailed 14-8 entering the second quarter but pulled out to a 40-37 lead by the end of the third quarter.

Lindsay Martin led Carroll County with 18 points on the strength of four 3-pointers, and Dalton scored 15 for the Cavaliers.

Jordyn Cole tossed in a game-high 20 points for Richlands.

Galax 56, Holston 55 OT: Allison White’s putback capped a furious fourth-quarter rally and Galax went on to edge Holston 56-55 in overtime in a nondistrict girls’ game Tuesday in Galax.

The Maroon Tide (4-2) trailed Holston 43-27 after three  quarters of play but roared back in the fourth by outscoring the Cavaliers 22-8.

White scored 14 of her team-high 16 points after the third quarter to lead the comeback, and Taylor Bryant added 12 points.

Holston (2-4) was led by Taylor Doss with 21 points. Morgan Lowe and Brittany Boyd had 14 and 11, respectively.
