INDEPENDENCE – Grayson County used its superior defense and size advantage Friday night to cruise to a 48-9 victory over Alleghany, N.C. in the season opener for the Blue Devils at Bill Strong Field.

And while the defense was holding the Trojans to only nine points, the offense took over to provide the points for the non-district win.

Alleghany got a good opening kickoff run to its own 37 and Austin Sprinkle picked up six yards to the 43 on a pass from Grant Caudill. The Trojans then got a taste of the defensive unit of the Blue Devils when they stopped two runs for losses and smothered the quarterback for a loss back to the 35, forcing a punt.

The Blue Devils got the ball in good field position at their own 43. John Bilbrey ripped off a 9-yard gainer to the Alleghany 48. James Williams picked up three and a pass from quarterback Max Rodgers to brother Mikey gave the Blue Devils a first down at the 28. Williams and Bilbrey took turns moving the ball closer to the goal line. Williams finished off the drive on a 5-yard run with 6:50 to play in the period. Mario Ruiz kicked the extra point for an early 7-0 lead.

The Blue Devils struck again in the first period when Rodgers connected with speedy Spencer Roberts who raced 79 yards for the touchdown. Ruiz kicked the extra point for a 14-0 lead.

After Alleghany punted early in the second period, the Blue Devils put together another drive. The big play of the drive came when Lucas Rudy caught a Rodgers pass and he was stopped at the 1-yard line. Max Rodgers scored on the next play on a quarterback sneak. A kick by Ruiz made it 21-0.

But the Trojans didn’t fold despite the big deficit. Caudill hit Sprinkle on a 65-yard pass and he raced in for the touchdown. Jorge Santos kicked the extra point to cut the deficit to 21-7.

The Blue Devils didn’t waste any time adding another touchdown when Bilbrey reeled off an impressive run for a 52-yard touchdown. Ruiz kicked the extra point for a 28-7 lead.

Grayson made it 35-7 at halftime when Max Rodgers scored on a 4-yard run and Ruiz kicked the extra point.

The Blue Devils started the second half like they did the first half when Max Rodgers hit Rudy on another long pass to the Trojan 4-yard line. Bilbrey ended the drive on a 4-yard touchdown run. The extra point was blocked for a 41-7 lead.

Grayson capped its scoring for the game with seven minutes to the play in the third period when Max Rodgers hit brother Mikey in the end zone for a 40-yard touchdown pass. Ruiz kicked the extra point and the Blue Devils had their final margin.

Blue Devil coach Brett McPherson played several second and third team players to finish the game.

The Trojans got a break in the fourth when the ball was centered over the Blue Devil punter’s head into the end zone. They tackled the runner for a 2-point safety.

Alleghany never gave up and was driving for a touchdown with time running out. The game closed on a dramatic play when Caudill hit fullback Jake Hampton who was stopped at the Blue Devil 1-yard line as the horn sounded.

The Blue Devils will travel to Chilhowie this Friday for a 7:30 p.m. nondistrict game.
