SPARTA, N.C. –– After holding Elkin to just two points in the first quarter, Grayson County managed just two points itself in the second period, falling to the Elks 38-32 in a nondistrict game Monday at Alleghany High School.

“We really did play hard,” Grayson County coach Tiny Funk said. “We gave ourselves a chance. They hit a lot of big shots, and we didn’t hit a lot of shots at all. We got the ball where we wanted it most of the night, we just couldn’t get them to fall.”

Grayson County (1-8) led 8-2 after eight minutes, but Elkin went on a 17-2 tear the rest of the half to lead 19-10 at halftime.

The Blue Devils made a game of it, pulling to within striking distance several times in the second half. Trailing 23-12, Grayson held Elkin scoreless for nearly six minutes, reeling off seven unanswered points. Catherine Vaughan’s baseline jumper pulled the Devils to within 23-19, but Elkin’s Brittany Stike nailed a 3-pointer to halt the run.

Vaughan hit two foul shots with 3:11 to play for a 34-30 score, but Elkin hit enough free throws down the stretch to seal the win, including 5-of-6 in the fourth quarter by Bailey Carter.

“I thought we defended well,” Funk said. “They hit some shots I didn’t mind them taking. We showed a lot of improvement since our last game.”

Vaughan and Devin Osborne led Grayson County with eight points each. Elkin got 12 points from Jordan Eldridge.
