BASTIAN –– Don’t go to sleep on Bland County. The Bears are playing some baseball.

Aaron Rose limited Galax to one unearned run on five hits as Bland pulled out a 3-1 Mountain Empire District win Tuesday afternoon. The Bears improved to 6-3-1 with the victory, dropping Galax to 4-7.

Bland County scored single runs in each the first, third and fifth innings and held off a late Galax threat to seal the win.

Kaleb Lambert doubled to lead off the bottom of the first and gave the Bears a 1-0 lead when he scored on Andy Pauley’s single before Galax turned a double play to escape the inning.

Two Maroon Tide errors produced a Bland County run in the third, while two errors and a bases-loaded walk pushed across the Bears’ final run in the fifth.

Galax had two runners tagged out trying to score, one each in the third and fourth innings, before finally breaking through in the top of the seventh. Bryant Cox led off with a double to left and took third on a wild pitch, scoring on a Bland County error. Rose got a strikeout and two ground balls to ice the win.

Lambert had three of the Bears’ seven hits and Gwyn added a pair of hits for Bland County. Rose struck out eight and walked one, earning the complete-game win on just 83 pitches. Stew Merdian (4 ip) and Caleb Pack allowed just one earned run between them as the Maroon Tide committed six errors.

Floyd County 7, Carroll County 5: The Buffaloed exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally for a nonconference win Monday in Floyd.

Carroll County (2-4) built a 5-1 lead through the middle innings and maintained a 5-2 lead with two down in the bottom of the sixth, but Floyd County brought five runs across with two outs to seize the lead. Matt Bary drilled a three-run double to left to tie the game at 5-5 and Jared Odeil followed with a two-run double to put the Buffaloes into the lead.

Carroll County got a runner on with one out in the seventh but was unable to pull off the comeback.

Blake Wood scored on a Seth Burris sacrifice in the second, and Reece Edwards singled, scoring on Kenley Meredith’s double for a 2-0 Carroll lead in the third.

Ethan Webb had an RBI single in the fourth and the Cavaliers went ahead 5-1 in the fifth on a Chris Marshall RBI single and a double steal.

Odeil and Vest were both 3-for-4 with Odeil and Bary driving in three runs each for the Buffaloes.

Webb had three hits for Carroll County while Edwards, Meredith, Wood and Utt added two hits each.
