Despite an influx of 40,000 or more people, police said there were few arrests during the fiddlers' convention.

Tens of thousands of musicians and fans of bluegrass and old-time music were in Galax last week, most packed into the confines of Felts Park, but police report that the crowd at the 75th Annual Galax Old Fiddlers' Convention was relatively peaceful.

For the week of Aug. 9-14, Galax Police Chief Rick Clark reported:
• 12 drunk in public charges. Two of those were denied access to the park by the Galax Moose Lodge, the convention's sponsors, and were arrested on Main Street.
• eight misdemeanor possession of marijuana charges.
• four charges for underage possession of alcohol.
“Obviously, considering the thousands of people who were in attendance, it was a good event,” Clark said.
Joining Galax police to patrol the park during the event are deputies from neighboring counties, Virginia State Police and drug and alcohol enforcement officers.
